which ammo brands were smooth and which caused problems? Real world Canik TP9 reliability

I’ve been loving my Canik TP9SF at the range, but I’m still in that phase where I’m trying to figure out what ammo is just plain boring and reliable. I’m not trying to be fancy, I just want a Canik TP9SF or Canik TP9SFX to run without random surprises so I can focus on improving.

Last weekend I brought two different boxes and one of them ran smooth the whole session, then the other gave me a couple hiccups that had me second guessing my grip and everything. If you have a Canik TP9SF or TP9SFX, what ammo types or brands have been the most boringly reliable for you, and what ammo or case type seemed to cause issues like failures to feed or light strikes?

Totally normal to second guess your grip when the Canik TP9SF starts acting up, but a lot of “random” range hiccups are just ammo variation. For learning and consistency, stick to one boring factory brass FMJ load for a few sessions and see if the Canik TP9SFX stays 100%. If it does, you have a clean baseline, then you can test other boxes one at a time without wondering if it was you or the ammo.

you know, the 'boring' secret with Caniks is that they are designed around 124gr NATO rounds. Most standard 115gr range ammo is actually a bit underpowered for the factory recoil spring, which is why you’ll get random failures to eject or return to battery

If you switch to Blazer Brass 124gr or Winchester NATO (the white box with the cross logo), those hiccups usually vanish. once you’ve put about 300–500 rounds of the 124gr through it, the spring settles in and it’ll usually eat the cheap 115gr stuff without a complaint

I use the Blazer Brass 124gr FMJ, it's a reliable training ammo. Also, Magtech 124gr FMJ, it's dirtier but highly reliable

Interesting, I didn't know it was tuned for 124 grain. Thanks for the info. Just ordered 2k rounds of Foucchi, glad it was the 124!

The least expensive ammo I have run though my TP9Sfx is the Sellier & Belot 9mm. It is reasonably clean burning, quite accurate and did not present any problems in my Sfx functioning. I have had no problems with any of the big name American made ammo, even the remans from Freedom Munitions. However, my Sfx is a Gen1, I do not know if the same will hold true with the newer models.

My Tp9SFX eats everything that I feed it, but what are you actually aiming for? Range, comp or just hearing & feeling that 9mm? For range I have used mostly over the counter ammo from reduced recoil 100 grain RN to 147 grain FN from different mfg's, all have performed good with factory internals, just keep it cleaned & lube! For comp I only use Hush 147 grain clean burning, recycling & accuracy has been awesome. Never tried any HP no need for it.

Tp9SFX runs most loads well, pick ammo based on use and keep it clean and properly lubricated.

"they are designed around 124gr NATO rounds" bingo... a lot of the 9mm available here in the usa is trash... if you shoot real 9mm ammo you wont have any problems... if you want to shoot wimpy ammo, get a reduced power recoil spring... nato ballistics = 124 grains traveling @ 1250 fps...
